San Diego, CA–More than 130 fire crews were on the scene of a massive fire that broke out at a wrecking yard in Otay Mesa on Saturday.
San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to reports of the fire around noon on Cactus Road, south of State Route 905. Fire crews arrived to find large plumes of smoke rising rapidly from the wrecking yard.
Due to the intensity of the blaze, fire crews from Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, and Cal Fire San Diego were dispatched to the scene to stop the spread of the fire which threatened several homes in the area.
Cactus Road closed between State Route 905 and Siempre Viva, and Airway Road closed from Cactus to Brittania, San Diego Fire-Rescue tweeted.
Around 20 people were evacuated while fire crews battled the blaze from the ground and in the air.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire later in the afternoon. Only one home suffered exterior heat damage, authorities said.
Residents will return to their homes once fire crews complete the mop-up operation, and monitor the area for any flare-ups.
Authorities said around 200 vehicles were destroyed in the wrecking yard.
There are no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
