Man accused of stabbing woman arrested after SWAT standoff

January 20, 2021 by San Diego

OCEANSIDE–Oceanside police arrested a 20-year-old domestic violence suspect after he barricaded himself inside his apartment on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Vixiano Cherestal, was taken into custody shortly after the standoff ended.

Oceanside police responded at 5:30 p.m. to an apartment complex located at 312 Rancho Del Oro. Witnesses reported a female with stab wounds to her neck and arm. When police officers arrived, they found the victim, a 20-year-old female in a nearby apartment, being treated by neighbors. The victim was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a man run back into the apartment. Police officers observed the man inside the apartment holding a knife. After nearly two hours of attempting to get the man to exit the apartment, the Oceanside SWAT and Crisis Negotiator Teams responded to the scene.

Detectives from the Crimes of Violence unit obtained a search warrant for the apartment. After several more hours of attempting to communicate with the man with no response, the SWAT team made entry into the apartment. A police K-9 and several less than lethal munitions were deployed, with the man being arrested with only minor injuries.

Paramedics treated the man prior to being booked into the Vista Detention Facility for attempted murder charges.
