Del Mar, CA–Del Mar’s popular annual event, the Penguin Plunge, has been canceled for the second straight year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The City of Del Mar made the announcement Monday on their website.

“We regret to announce that for the second straight year, the City of Del Mar will not be hosting the Penguin Plunge on New Year’s Day…To us, however, nothing is as important as your health and safety. We look forward to returning to our great traditions when authorities deem it safe to do so.”

The event typically draws thousands of swimmers to the 17th Street beach for a chilly swim.
