San Diego, CA–SANDAG Bike to Work Day made a return on Thursday morning in San Diego county.

While pit stop visits are still being counted, preliminary estimates show that there were more than 6,800 pit stop visits throughout the San Diego region.

At pit stops, participants received a brand new San Diego Regional Bike Map and were encouraged to find new routes among the 1,751 miles of featured bikeways.

“Bike to Work Day is a great opportunity for people to try biking as part of their daily routine in a safe, fun, and supportive atmosphere. Biking is a cleaner, greener, and healthier transportation choice and can help the region cut back on auto emissions,” said SANDAG Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. “SANDAG is hard at work building bikeways and walkways that are comfortable and convenient for all ages and abilities.”

This year alone, SANDAG has opened 11 miles of new bikeways and expects to start construction on more than 22 miles within the next year.

The cool weather enabled thousands of bike riders to visit the 100 pit stops spanning from Oceanside to Lakeside to the San Ysidro border, and even in Tijuana. Pit stops across the region were hosted by healthcare organizations, local businesses, municipalities, government agencies, schools, bike shops, and event sponsors.

SANDAG is encouraging those who participated to share a selfie in their 2022 Bike to Work Day t-shirt to win an electric bike, courtesy of the Pedal Ahead Electric Bike Program. Share a photo and tag @SANDAGregion with #BiketoWorkSD on Facebook and Instagram, and @SANDAG on Twitter. Entries must be submitted by Thursday, May 26, at 11:59 p.m.
