Escondido, CA–Three people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a DUI checkpoint conducted by the Escondido Police Department Friday evening in Escondido, authorities said.
The checkpoint was held at Centre City Pkwy and Decatur Way from 5:45 p.m. to 11:50 p.m., the Escondido Police Department said in a news release.
While conducting a DUI checkpoint, approximately 738 motorists were contacted. Two drivers were arrested for DUI, and a third driver was arrested for violating the terms of his DUI probation. In addition, 23 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended license or not possessing a valid driver’s license.
According to the Escondido Police Department, the checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.
Another DUI and Driver’s License checkpoint is planned for December.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
