Homeless felon in voucher program arrested for vehicle theft, meth

El Cajon, CA–A felon staying at a motel as part of the County Equus homeless voucher program was arrested Monday on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of meth, authorities said.
On Monday around 11:45 p.m., officers began receiving ALPR alerts of a stolen vehicle near West Main Street and Marshall Avenue. An officer found the stolen vehicle, a 2020 Kia Optima, in the parking lot of the Relax Inn and Suites with a male inside.
According to El Cajon police, the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Aaron Taylor of San Diego, was staying at the motel as part of the County Equus homeless voucher program. Taylor, a felon with a lengthy arrest history, also had meth on him when he was arrested for the stolen vehicle.
The El Cajon Police Department recently started an automated license plate reading (ALPR) program. ALPR cameras send a real-time crime alert to law enforcement when a stolen vehicle, or known wanted vehicle, from a state or national database, is detected.
