Sheriff’s Dept. investigates death of inmate at San Diego Central Jail

San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of an inmate found unresponsive in his cell at the San Diego Central Jail Tuesday, authorities said.

Sheriff’s investigators were notified around 2:30 p.m. that 24-year-old Brandon Andrew Yates, an individual in Sheriff’s custody, passed away. 

Yates was arrested on Monday by the San Diego police for burglary. He resided in San Diego at the time of his arrest.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, deputies were conducting a safety check around 1:36 p.m., and found Yates unresponsive and displaying signs of distress. Medical staff and deputies immediately began life-saving measures including CPR, Naloxone, and an AED. The paramedics arrived and assumed medical care. Despite their life-saving efforts, Yates was pronounced dead at 2:14 p.m. by a hospital doctor.

The Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board representative was notified of the incident and responded to the scene.

As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and will conduct a thorough investigation. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
