San Diego County, CA–With Christmas and New Year’s Day just around the corner, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department will increase impaired driving patrols across the region through January 1.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, an impaired driving arrest and conviction can cost more than $15,000 in legal and court fees.

This year, deputies have arrested more than 1,000 people for impaired driving in San Diego County.

“This holiday season, be responsible and don’t drive while under the influence,” said Sheriff Kelly Martinez.

Driving under the influence doesn’t just refer to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also impair, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs.

The Sheriff’s Department advises the public to plan a safe way home before the festivities begin. Designate a sober driver, and leave the car keys at home. If impaired, use a taxi or ride-sharing service.  You can also call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation

Anyone who sees an impaired driver on the road should call 9-1-1 immediately.

Funding for the impaired driving enforcement program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
