Toddler dies in accidental shooting at Fallbrook home

Fallbrook, CA–A one-year girl was accidentally shot by her 3-year-old sibling Monday morning at their home in Fallbrook, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.
Sheriff’s Department dispatch received a call around 7:30 a.m. about a shooting at a residence in the 1100 block of South Stagecoach Lane in Fallbrook.
When deputies arrived at the home they confirmed the 3-year-old got ahold of an unsecured handgun.
Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and transported the girl to Palomar Hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead at about 8:30 a.m.
The Sheriff’s Department is not releasing the name of the victim out of respect for the family and the fact she is a juvenile.
“The Sheriff’s Department extends our sympathies to the family and those affected by this death,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
Sheriff’s homicide investigators are working to gather more information to determine the circumstances of the death.
The investigation is ongoing.
The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office was notified of the incident and will be updated with information during the investigation.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
