Spring Valley, CA–A man is in custody after attacking his wife and sparking a five-hour standoff in the East County on Sunday, authorities said.
The incident was reported just after 4:30 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 10200 block of Madrid Way in Spring Valley.
Deputies from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station responded to a call of a woman being attacked by her husband. Before she was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the woman told deputies her husband, 36-year-old Steven Walker was in possession of two handguns and a rifle.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, deputies attempted to contact Walker, but he went back into his apartment and locked the door. Despite multiple phone calls and announcements from deputies for him to exit his apartment, Walker refused.
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail, Sheriff’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Unit, and Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiations Team were called to the scene. A search warrant was also obtained by Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station Investigators.
It was just after 10:30 p.m. when Walker exited his apartment and peacefully surrendered to deputies. He was arrested on charges of assault with great bodily injury and domestic battery.
The investigation is ongoing.
