Oceanside Police awarded grant to increase patrols on roads

Oceanside, CA–The Oceanside Police Department received a $310,000 grant that will increase patrols throughout the community and provide other traffic safety programs to help reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on the roads.
“This grant funding allows us to support our ongoing traffic safety efforts in the community,” Oceanside Police Sergeant Clint Bussey said. “Our intent is to stop the most unlawful and dangerous behaviors that put people at risk and create an environment where everyone feels safe traveling.”
The grant will pay for additional enforcement measures, including DUI checkpoints and patrols specifically focused on suspected impaired drivers, enforcement operations focused on suspected distracted drivers in violation of California’s hands-free cell phone law, bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operations on driver behaviors that put vulnerable road users at risk.
Oceanside police will also target violations that cause vehicle collisions including speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and red-light running, improper turning or lane changes, street racing, and sideshow activities.
A motorcycle safety enforcement operation will focus on rider safety and the vehicles around motorcycles.
The safety operations will be collaborative enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies.
The grant will include officer training and recertification: Standard Field Sobriety Test, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Expert.
The grant program will run through September 2024.
Funding for the safety program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
