Carlsbad, CA–Carlsbad police responding to a call of a shoplift at a grocery store Friday found human remains near a homeless encampment, authorities said.

According to the Carlsbad Police Department, officers were searching for suspected shoplifters around 4:09 p.m. at Ralph’s grocery store at 7140 Avenida Encinas. While checking the area, officers located what appeared to be a homeless encampment with human remains in the brush area, southeast of the shopping center. Based on the condition of the remains, police believe it had been there for some time, possibly months, said Lt. Shaun Lawton in a news release.

The identity of the deceased is pending further investigation by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

Police say there was no indication of foul play or anything otherwise suspicious located at the scene.
