San Diego, CA–The San Diego Seniors Community Foundation has awarded the Jewish Family Service College Avenue Center $10,000 as part of the foundation’s Empower San Diego Senior Center grant program.

College Avenue Center, along with 10 other local senior centers and nonprofits, received the grants to help implement the foundation’s “San Diego Master Plan for Senior Centers,” a countywide plan aimed to enhance modern senior centers across local communities.

The 2023 Empower Grant allows Jewish Family Services to expand program offerings at College Avenue Center by compensating instructors, in addition to volunteer-led classes. Current offerings for the East County community include tai chi and yoga. The center furthers the goals of the San Diego Master Plan for Senior Centers, by providing inclusive spaces where all seniors can gain valuable knowledge and have trusted community resources they can rely on.

“Our mission is to provide a strong and healthy community in which older San Diegans can thrive,” said Kristine Stensberg, senior director of Nutrition and Aging Care Services at JFS. “With the help of this grant, we will continue to make connections and provide the help and assistance seniors in our community need.”

The College Avenue Center, located in Temple Emanu-El, acts as a central meeting hub for older adults in East County to socialize, receive hot meals, and enjoy activities facilitated by community volunteers, such as trivia, art classes, tech help, and music appreciation. The center is located at 6299 Capri Drive in San Diego.
