Nearly 100 weapons collected at gun safety event in South Bay

Chula Vista, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department along with other local law enforcement agencies removed unwanted weapons off the streets through a Gun Safety event Saturday in the South Bay.

A total of 79 unwanted firearms were turned in by the public during the event at the South Bay Courthouse in Chula Vista.

Individuals received a $100 gift card for handguns, rifles, and shotguns or a $200 gift card for assault weapons and ghost guns.

Approximately 20 cable locks and 55 gun safety lock boxes were also given to people looking to secure firearms kept in their homes.

All weapons collected will be processed by law enforcement agencies. Any firearms returned as being involved in a crime will be followed up on with the appropriate agency. If any guns are found to be stolen, the original owners will be contacted. All remaining weapons will be destroyed in accordance with the law.

Other agencies participating in the gun safety event were the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Chula Vista Police Department, San Diego Police Department, Coronado Police Department, and National City Police Department.
