Sheriff’s Dept. search for a missing hiker at Three Sisters Falls

Julian, CA–The Sheriff’s Department is searching for a 27-year-old missing hiker last seen swimming at Three Sisters Falls on Friday in Julian.

Two people were swimming at the middle level of the falls when one man went underwater and did not resurface, according to authorities.

Deputies along with Cal Fire San Diego, Sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter, and volunteers with Sheriff’s Search and Rescue searched for the hiker around the waterfalls until sunset. The darkness and amount of water flowing into the waterfalls made it too dangerous to continue with the search, Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant William Amavisca stated in a news release.

To help with the search efforts, the Helix Water District shut off a dam that feeds water to Three Sisters Falls to decrease the water flow.

The search for the missing man resumed around 8 a.m. on Saturday. Deputies with the Alpine Sheriff’s Station, Julian Sheriff’s Substation, Sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter, CAL FIRE San Diego, U.S. Forest Service, as well as volunteers with Sheriff’s Search and Rescue. The Sheriff’s Volunteer Dive Unit was called to help with the search.
