Chula Vista, CA–OnStage Playhouse announced the world premiere production of “Star of Ocotillo,” an alternative Christmas play that will run December 1 to 23.
“Star of Ocotillo” is written and directed by Herbert Siguenza and James P. Darvas. This marks the third collaboration between both award-winning artists, creating a theatrical experience that promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience.
The play offers audiences a dark Chicano comedy with miraculous consequences. Set against the backdrop of a luxury home on the US-Mexico border, constructed by a Hollywood producer and his TV star wife, the play takes a daring dive into provocative storytelling. The unraveling of secrets, the exposure of hidden truths, and the inclusion of a young undocumented girl carrying the hope of a new world contribute to the richness and depth of this theatrical masterpiece.
The cast of “Star of Ocotillo” includes Teri Brown, Adriana Cuba, Maya Sofia Enciso, Javier Guerrero, and Dave Rivas.
Katy Carter will provide stage management with costume design by Brad DuBois, set design by Doug Cummings, lighting design by Karelle Arcedera, and sound design by Gabriel Zendejas.
“OnStage Playhouse has become my artistic home because they produce the most provocative work in San Diego, and ‘Star of Ocotillo’ is my most provocative play,” Siguenza said.
This sentiment echoes the artistic ethos of OnStage Playhouse, known for delivering compelling and thought-provoking performances that push boundaries and challenge conventional norms.
The collaboration between Siguenza and Darvas promises a theatrical experience that not only entertains but also challenges perceptions and sparks meaningful conversations.
“It’s beyond a privilege to be working with Mr. Siguenza on our third collaboration. Mr. Siguenza has outdone himself with this nuanced and thoughtful play,” OnStage Playhouse Artistic Director James P. Darvas said. “To be given his trust in my interpretation is something I will continually be grateful for.”
“Star of Ocotillo” is a testament to OnStage Playhouse’s commitment to presenting groundbreaking and socially relevant work that resonates with audiences.
