Encinitas, CA–A pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning on Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Encinitas Fire Department personnel responded to a traffic collision around 12:30 a.m. involving a vehicle and pedestrian on Coast Highway 101 at Encinitas Boulevard.

Fire Department personnel transported the man to an area hospital with major injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

A vehicle was driving westbound on Encinitas Boulevard approaching Coast Highway 101 when a man was walking northbound crossing Encinitas Boulevard. The vehicle struck the man then continued westbound onto West B Street and fled the area, said Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Jeremy Collis in a news release.

The vehicle is described as a dark-colored sedan or van, possibly a Chrysler or Dodge, with damage to the front driver’s side of the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Department says it is not known if alcohol or drugs are a factor in the collision.

The North Coastal Sheriff’s Station’s Traffic Division is investigating the incident.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call (760) 966-3500 or the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200.
