Oceanside, CA–A family of six and their cat were displaced from their home early Saturday morning after a structure fire broke out in their garage in North County, fire officials said.

Fire crews responded to reports of a garage fire at a two-story single-family residence at 401 Lupine Way around 1:47 a.m. in Oceanside, the Oceanside Fire Department said.

The blaze erupted while the family was sleeping, and it extended into the second floor of the structure before firefighters could get it under control. Two vehicles in the driveway were also destroyed in the fast-moving fire.

Two adults and four children, ranging in age from 9 to 19 were evacuated safely and were sheltered at a neighbor’s residence. The American Red Cross was called to aid the family.

No injuries to firefighters or residents were reported, and the fire did not extend to neighboring houses, although they were initially evacuated as a precaution.

Fire crews were able to extinguish all of the hot spots in the garage, adjacent bedrooms, and attic area.

Firefighters worked with the family to identify important personal items, including Christmas presents, that could be safely removed from the structure.

The cause of the fire is currently not known.
