San Diego police investigate fatal shooting at South Bay recreation center

San Diego, CA–San Diego police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead, and multiple people injured on May 5 at a recreation center in the South Bay.
San Diego Police Communications Center received a call at around 7:03 p.m. of a shooting at the Montgomery Waller Recreation Center in the Otay Mesa West neighborhood.
When officers arrived at the scene they discovered multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers began to render lifesaving measures on the victims, the San Diego Police Department stated in a news release.
One victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. He is described as a 20-year-old Hispanic male. He has been identified but authorities have not released his name at this time.
The second victim, a 19-year-old Hispanic male, was transported to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He is expected to survive his injuries. His name was also not released.
A third male companion of the victims was also transported to a local hospital for an evaluation, but it was later determined that he was not struck by gunfire.
According to police, the victims arrived at the recreation center in a vehicle. Almost immediately upon arriving, they encountered a group of males in the parking lot. One of the males issued a gang challenge to the victims. Then the group began throwing glass bottles at the victims. One of the males began firing a gun at the victims, striking two of them. The males then left the area.
Detectives received reports of a white sedan that left the recreation center at a high rate of speed following the shooting and drove eastbound on Coronado Avenue.
The main suspect was described as a 19 to 20-year-old Hispanic male with a thin build.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
