Escondido, CA–Three people were arrested at a driving under the influence and driver’s license checkpoint conducted by the Escondido Police Department in Escondido Saturday, authorities said.

While conducting the checkpoint, officers arrested one motorist on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. One driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant, and another for drug possession. In addition, 18 drivers were cited for driving without a license, and one was cited for driving on a suspended license, according to the Escondido Police Department in a news release.

The checkpoint was held at Centre City Parkway and Decatur Avenue between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. Of the 1,496 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint 749 motorists were contacted.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary goal of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.

The Escondido Police Department will hold another DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on March 8, 2024.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
