Sheriff’s Dept. collects 105 unwanted firearms at gun safety event

Encinitas, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies collected 105 unwanted firearms off the street at a gun safety event in Encinitas on Saturday.
The firearms were turned in by the public at Encinitas City Hall in the 500 block of South Vulcan Avenue.
Individuals received a $100 gift card for handguns, rifles, and shotguns or a $200 gift card for assault weapons and ghost guns. They also received 20 cable locks and 35 gun safety lock boxes to secure firearms kept in their homes.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, all weapons collected at the event will be processed. Any firearms coming back as being involved in a crime will be followed up on with the appropriate law enforcement agency. If any guns are found to be stolen, the original owners will be contacted. All remaining weapons will be destroyed in accordance with the law.
The Sheriff’s Department teamed with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Carlsbad Police Department, and the City of Encinitas for the Gun Safety event.
